"Yiorgos Koulouris 1945-2016"

19/07/2018 - 03/09/2018

Giorgos Koulouris (1945-2016) is considered as one of the most distinguished painters of the Post-War art period in Corfu; he, along with other determined artists, chose to experiment in innovative styles of aesthetic expression and to differentiate themselves from the existing standards.

He was born in Corfu in 1945; his ancestors came from Lefkimmi. He was mainly self-taught and he moved to Paris from 1978 to 1981, where he studied various techniques of painting and engraving. The distinctive themes of his paintings include female nude, landscapes and still life. His first individual exhibition opened at the Reading Society of Corfu in 1983; followed by many individual and group exhibitions ( Reading Society of Corfu in 1985, “Epochi” in 1985, French Institute of Corfu in 1985, “Corfu Palace” Hotel in 1986, “Zygos” in 1987 and in 1992, Municipal Theatre of Corfu in 1996 and in 2011, “Zygos” from 1991 to 1996 e.t.c.).  In 1998-1999 he was appointed professor at the School of Fine Arts and Modern Technology of the Technical University of Crete.

In this exhibition, presented by the Corfu Museum of Asian Art with the intention of honoring Giorgos Koulouris, part of his work will be displayed; the protagonistes will be artistic views of Corfu Town, landscapes of the island as well as a variety of female nude, all paintings provided by the private collection of his family.

Mainly aquarelles and oil paintings will be presented; formed by the artist during and after the 1980's. They reflect the successive variations of an independent artistic touch; the connection of the painter with the femaly body as an effective artwork, a canvas to be decorated with expression; and his restless eye over Corfu at the end of the 20th Century and at the start of the 21th Century.
